Reykjanes Peninsula Private Tour

from 62.900kr.

What is the first thing that you see when you touch down in Iceland?  Volcanic lava fields is the answer that we are looking for.  The Keflavik International Airport is located at the Reykjanes Peninsula, which is the youngest geological addition to Iceland.  With lava fields covering the entire peninsula, the youngest ones only about 800 years old,  you are basically landing at an active volcano. Reykjanes is one of two areas in Iceland where the tectonic plates go through the country.  They glide on average by 2 cm each year.

Option:

We can start our tour either at Keflavik Airport if you are arriving or in Reykjavik.

The Tour:

We drive from Reykjavik towards Iceland’s 7.th deepest lake, Kleifarvatn.  Since the earthquakes of 2000 the lake has reduced in size by 20% but is now regaining it’s former size. From Kleifarvatn we go to Seltun, geothermal area of Krysuvik.  There you can see bubbling mud springs and smell the extraordinary sulfur smell.  We continue to the town of Grindavik, one of Iceland’s many fishing villages.  In Grindavik, you can visit the ,, Saltfisksetrid” which is a museum about salt fish and the importance of that to our society at the time, if you want. We continue our journey to the hot spring of Gunna.  Gunna was a very angry lady that rented a small peace of land and the landowner took her only pot instead of rent that she owed him.  She died of rage and came back to kill him(more on the tour 🙂 ).  From Gunnuhver we go to the oldest lighthouse in the country, Reykjanesviti.  Eldey is a small island about 10 miles from the shore and can be seen in a clear day, Eldey is the home of one of the largest Gannet colony in the world.  We continue to the bridge between continents, where you can walk over the gap that is between the North-American plate and the Eur-Asian plate.  Next stop is the Viking museum in Reykjanesbaer, where the Icelandic viking ship ,, Islendingur” is preserved. We head back to Reykjavik.
