Jökulsárlón – Glacier Lagoon private tour

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

The lagoon:

Jökulsárlón, or Glacier lagoon as it’s called in English, is a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park.  The lagoon covers an area that is about 18km2.  The lake is the deepest lake in Iceland and the largest glacial lake in Europe. Four Hollywood movies have been shot in the lagoon.  Can you name them all?

Along our journey towards the Glacier Lagoon, we pass by some lovely villages.  We visit Seljalandsfoss and its neighbour Skogarfoss. The Glacier Lagoon started to form in 1934 when the glacier started to retreat.  Today the lagoon is constantly getting larger as approximately 500 square meters of ice break off the glacier every year.

When we arrive, take a moment to look at the unspoiled nature and feel the mystified energy that the area gives you.  There are boat trips available on the lagoon, either an amphibian or a zodiac.  Both need to be booked in advance and are not included in the price of the tour.
